Somatic Experiencing®

A body-oriented approach to working with trauma, developed by Dr. Peter Levine — gentle, at your own pace, without having to relive the trauma.

What is Somatic Experiencing (SE)®?

Somatic Experiencing (SE)® is a body-oriented approach to working with trauma, developed by Dr. Peter Levine. It rests on the idea that traumatic experiences often get “stuck” in the nervous system and are not fully processed — which can give rise to physical and emotional symptoms such as stress, anxiety, sleep problems or tension.

SE focuses on releasing these unresolved stress responses in the body and restoring its natural balance. It is about helping the body do what it originally could not: discharge and process the energy bound up in stress.

How does Somatic Experiencing® work?

Unlike many approaches that work mainly through talking, SE focuses on sensations in the body. Together we attend to subtle bodily responses and take small steps to gently regulate the nervous system — in a safe, contained space where you are welcome to feel at ease at any time.

A typical SE process might look like this

  1. 1Bringing attention to the bodyTogether we notice how your body responds to particular thoughts or memories.
  2. 2Gentle explorationRather than going straight into the traumatic experience, we work with small impulses that let the body gradually discharge tension and stress.
  3. 3Natural self-regulationThe body has a remarkable capacity to regulate itself. SE supports this natural process without overwhelming you.

Who is SE for?

Somatic Experiencing® is suited to people living with the effects of trauma, chronic stress or other strain. It is often used with:

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Anxiety and panic
  • Chronic pain or psychosomatic complaints
  • Emotional blocks or feelings of overwhelm

SE can complement other forms of therapy or stand on its own. People who feel “stuck” or cut off from their bodies often benefit from it in particular.

How long does therapy take?

The length varies from person to person and depends on your needs and pace. Sometimes a few sessions are enough to feel noticeable relief; in other cases a longer process makes sense.

What does an SE session feel like?

An SE session is usually gentle and respectful of body and emotions. You are actively involved throughout and set the pace. The aim is to create a sense of safety and self-efficacy while old burdens are released step by step.
